REVIEW #405 Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024)

SYNOPSIS

Three generations of the Deetz family return to Winter River after a family tragedy. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is soon flipped upside down on her return.

REVIEW

Tim Burton returns with a sequel to the hugely popular 1988 comedy and creates a super fun film that lives up to its predecessor, bringing something new and fresh whilst maintaining the same iconic style and comedy. Jenna Ortega is the big new addition and although she does perform well, I still think the returning cast stole the show! There’s one thing I’m incredibly envious of with these actors and that’s the fact they get to experience the Tim Burton sets in the flesh! A lot of them were practical and it not only helps from a visuals perspective but also from an immersive standpoint too. When it comes the storyline, I think they progressed really naturally from the original, creating a logical continuation that audiences could buy into. They do try to tackle a lot of sub plots in the movie and some worked well and others not so much. The vengeful ex wife plot point looked like it was going to play such a huge part in the movie but the truth is, it didn’t do anything for the overarching story at all and it was pretty anticlimactic in the end, which was disappointing. But there’s still a lot to enjoy, with new faces and characters to entertain us, new lip syncing possession to enjoy and of course the same old Michael Keaton doing wonders as the iconic Beetlejuice!
