REVIEW #428 The Substance (2023)
The Substance
Synopsis
Ageing star Elisabeth Sparkles is fired from her TV show on her 50th birthday and at a low point in her life, she looks to a mysterious substance to transform her into her best self.
My Review
The Substance utilises the abstract in a brilliant, body horror approach, tackling important themes such as the unhealthy beauty standards in Hollywood and the perverted executives in charge of the industry. Unlike many films who try to adopt this wild approach to symbolising such themes, The Substance never loses its audience in its pursuit for shock value, everything is in service of the plot and that leaves a coherent storyline that keeps you hooked from start to finish. Both Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley are brilliant and deserve huge credit for their execution. Meanwhile, I must praise the makeup and prosthetic artists who produced phenomenal work that the film simply wouldn’t be the same without. Director Coralie Fargeat flares creativity with her innovative ideas and she has gained a fan in me with this piece of work!
My rating: 8 out of 10
