REVIEW #457 Materialists (2025)
Materialists
Synopsis
A young and ambitious matchmaker finds herself torn between her perfect match and her imperfect ex boyfriend.
My Review
Materialists is a charming romance film that presents us with a love triangle that Twilight could be proud of, and in a similar fashion, it was also pretty obvious who Dakota Johnson’s Lucy was always going to choose in the end. I enjoyed seeing Chris Evans’ performance, who executed the rugged, aspiring actor really well and equally Pedro Pascals wealthy and endearing character Harry, was a worthy counterpart. Dakota carried the film okay, but lately it just feels as though all of her performances are the same and I couldn’t quite shake that feeling throughout its duration. Considering this was a Celine Song film and an A24 one at that, it lacked their usual flare and style, ultimately feeling quite generic in its subject matter and execution. So despite finding enjoyment with Materialists, appreciating the cinematography especially, I did come away a little disappointed, having hoped for a lot more.
My Rating: 6.8 out of 10
