My Review

Kogonada has created an inventive addition to the romance genre, almost blending film and theatre to provide a really unique storytelling experience. Everything from the set design to the screenplay, felt like a bold decision that broke away from the norms of the genre and despite my lack of emotional connection to the lead characters, I couldn’t help but love how the film was pieced together. However, ultimately, in a film like this, you need to be invested in the romance of the characters, your emotions need to reflect the highs and lows of the story and unfortunately, I felt pretty disconnected in that regard. The pair might have bought a smile to my face at times and I really enjoyed Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie’s performances, but I felt nothing through their trials and tribulations and that’s never a good sign. So I left with the upmost respect for the ambition and attempt to break the mould, but A Big Bold Beautiful Journey could have used an extra thirty minutes at the start of the film, just to flesh out the characters a little more before jumping into the thick of it.

My Rating: 6.5 out of 10
