My Review

Del Toro’s Frankenstein is an elegant love letter to cinema and to the infamous story that clearly holds a special place in the directors heart! This is evident through the care and meticulous detail on display. Every set design is a piece of art, grandeur that immediately captures your attention, establishing that gothic tone which makes this latest iteration, the perfect film to conclude spooky season. The entire cast is electric, each actor suited perfectly to their respective characters, dropping performances that drive home the themes of isolation, creation and of course, what it means to be human and to connect with others. Jacob Elordi in particular was incredible as Frankenstein’s monster, boasting his ability to communicate the pain and loneliness of the character, the yearning for companionship, through his eyes alone!

My only real criticism is the monsters design, it just looked like a skin suit with a few dents (scars) in, put to shame by the original iconic design donned by Charles Ogle. It did improve when the monster developed further, especially when the hair was grown out. But nonetheless, Frankenstein will warm your heart just before breaking it, it has action, romance and heaps of emotion and I am so pleased I witnessed it on the UK’s biggest screen!

My Rating: 8.2 of 10
