My Review
Despite creating a distinct atmosphere that perfectly encapsulates the essence of playing a horror video game, Return to Silent Hill unfortunately falls way short of the mark, becoming the worst film I have watched in quite some time. Now, I am new to the Silent Hill universe, so perhaps lovers of the game may feel differently, knowing more about the lore, but I left the cinema somewhat confused.
Initially it seemed like they were opting for a story similar to Resident Evil Biohazard, which had me incredibly excited and I overlooked its technical flaws, opting to focus on the positives instead. The cult sub plot was promising, teasing this big uncovering that felt fundamental to the films premise, but ultimately it went absolutely nowhere, completely ruined by the abysmal conclusion. I detest the “it was all a dream” gimmick, it removes the stakes completely and it always feels like the film is afraid to fully commit to the creative decisions it made prior to the underwhelming ‘big reveal’. It’s clear Hollywood still hasn’t found the formula for getting game adaptations right, which is a real shame.
My Rating: 3 out of 10
