My Review
Crime 101 can boast Chris Hemsworth’s best performance for quite some time, portraying the elusive thief with a mysterious complexity that gradually unravels as the film progresses. It also has a stacked supporting cast that perfectly suits their respective characters. With the repetitive nature of this genre, crime thrillers such as this can easily wonder into generic territory but the writing carefully deconstructs themes of corruption, misogyny, greed and trauma through their lead characters and their individual lives, combining in the third act for a truly satisfying conclusion. We may not get a huge amount of time with any one of those supporting characters, but it’s the small glimpses into their lives that provide the vital context and I thought those minor tidbits were written really nicely.
I don’t believe the film has the quality to compete with the greats of this genre, but it’s an enjoyable addition that relies less on action and more on suspense. Definitely worth watching if you have the time.
My Rating: 7.8 out of 10
