My Review
Wonder Man is a brilliant example of Marvel television done right, a self contained superhero comedy that utilises the infectious chemistry of Kingsley and Abdul-Mateen. Powers take the backseat whilst Simon Williams is at the forefront! The show dives into his psyche, his ambitions and his trauma and in the process creates one of the most likeable characters in the MCU.
The most captivating aspect of the show is Simon’s chaotic journey as an actor, the absurdity of auditions and self tapes, the drive for success and the often self absorbing nature of actors. It then balances that comedic nature with a heartfelt back story that aligns perfectly with Ben Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery, who becomes a mentor to a man who just needs a little encouragement and guidance, a duo that we could never get bored of.
Wonder Man was nearly written off during the strikes and now stands as proof that smaller, contained stories in formats such as this can help explore the MCU in ways that large blockbusters never could. It normalises these powered individuals, they become relatable and that, at least for me, enhances the immersion of this world by creating realistic stories set in fantasy worlds. I hope it’s not too long before we see these characters again!
My Rating: 8 out of 10
