My Review

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is not only a sequel that remains faithful to the tone of its predecessor, but one that actually works brilliantly set against the backdrop of a more technologically advanced society that is slowly making the magazine world redundant, forcing large scale changes across the industry. In a world where sequels often feel like cash grab nostalgia bait, this feels like a breath of fresh air with its organic progression and on the nose social commentary!

It’s fair to say Meryl Streep, as always, is on top form with another stellar performance as the iconic Miranda Priestly, who brings so much depth to the character, creating a perfect example of an antihero archetype that audiences can’t help but adore. But the beating heart of the film is undoubtedly Stanley Tucci, who acts as the wholesome counterweight to each of the characters on display here. Despite the themes of the film working really well, the underpinning hurdle that the characters have to overcome and therefore the final climax too, did feel a little repetitive, not too dissimilar to the first film. However, it was still a satisfying conclusion, and perhaps avoiding too much change to the original formula that was incredibly successful makes sense here, but I do believe it would have benefited from taking a little more risk. I have no doubt this will be a box office hit and it was great seeing a packed out cinema, so a must watch this weekend!

My rating: 7.8 out of 10
