My Review

Supergirl marks the 2nd movie in James Gunn’s DC universe and although it’s far from a great movie, it is an enjoyable instalment that provides audiences with a glimpse to life away from Earth and the type of planets and characters we can expect to see from DC moving forward.

Milly Alcock is perfectly suited to the role of Kara (Supergirl) and the personality differences between this character and Superman provides a really interesting dynamic that I can’t wait to see more of. Unfortunately the script is really basic, it plays it safe with a simple story and it’s fair to say I wasn’t invested in the majority of the characters or their respective journeys, beyond the natural human reaction to want to protect a good dog in Krypto! The antagonist was your usual cut and paste alien tyrant that will be forgotten very quickly. I was also a little disappointed in the visuals which felt underwhelming, they had the chance to really commit to a vibrant colour pallet to bring the outer galaxies to life in a bold and impactful way, but ultimately it just looked pretty bland and dull. I wasn’t particularly impressed by the CGI / cinematography in Superman either, so I hope DC make some big improvements in that department.

But despite the flaws in the script, there is still enjoyment to be had with Supergirl, it has effective humour and a protagonist that is both likeable and brutal when she wants to be! But this character deserved far more quality and unfortunately it feels like a lot of the leading female superhero films are being consistently let down by poor writing, which is a real shame. That being said, I do appreciate Kara being introduced this early and I can’t wait to see where she appears next, likely in Man of Tomorrow I would assume!

My Rating: 5.5 out of 10

Thanks for reading.
