REVIEW #46 Godzilla vs Kong (2021)

Godzilla vs Kong is directed by Adam Wingard set in the world where Titans are a constant threat, with Godzilla as the Alpha. A team of scientists attempt to use Kong to access the Hollow Earth, a world inside the core of the earth which is believed to be the Titans true home. In doing so a huge battle between Kong and Godzilla is started, meanwhile other forces are attempting to harness the Titans power for their own agenda.

CAST & THE ACTING (7/10)

Millie Bobbie Brown and Kyle Chandler reprise their roles as Maddie and Mark Russell with a host of other actors joining the cast. These include Alexander Skarsgård, Julian Dennison, Rebecca Hall and Eiza González. I think the cast as a whole done a pretty good job, it was clear that producers attempted to inject more comedy into this film compared to the previous two instalments. Especially with Dennison’s character Josh and Brian Henry’s character Bernie and they both done well at delivering that comical element in this movie. I wouldn’t say there was really a stand out performance that would justify an above average score but most of the film was focused on the huge battle scenes so I never thought that we’d see great acting sequences.

PLOT & THE STORYLINE (8/10)

I expected the Hollow Earth element to be introduced at some stage with it being hinted in previous films and I really liked it. It provided clear explanation of the origins of the Titans and the route of their power which helped explain the previous films and the events in this film too. However one criticism I do have is how advanced the human technology is in the film, it’s almost like they have gravity defying spaceship type vehicles now which is such a jump in the small time between this film and the previous films. I understand they had to make it entertaining and it certainly is that but there has to be a limit or at least some detail given about how they have suddenly advanced so far in terms of their tech. The storyline was a little predictable but it was good to watch nonetheless so I think another score of 8 is fair.

CINEMATOGRAPHY & SPECIAL EFFECTS (8.5/10)

The visual effects were great and they needed to be because there are so many large scale battles between Titans that literally wipe out entire cities. So if the CGI was anything other then great then it would completely ruin the film. The cinematography I actually thought wasn’t as good as Godzilla: King of Monsters, there were some really great scenes captured in that film and the visuals were fantastic, which I would have liked to have scene more of in Godzilla vs Kong. So I believe and 8.5 is a fair score here and still a very good score too!

OVERALL (7.8/10)

I did enjoy this film and I am so glad I waited to watch it in the cinema because the cinematic visuals and sounds are so much better. The acting was good and it had a decent cast but I felt the focus was more on the CGI battles rather than high quality acting sequences, which is to be expected in a film like this. The storyline was easy to follow and and flowed quite nicely, without seeming rushed, which was good! However I didn’t really understand how the human technology in the film was so much more advanced in comparison to the previous instalments in the franchise because they are set within a similar time frame. The special effects were great and the battle scenes were really entertaining, showing the devastating effects of the Titans. So give it a go and if you are able to get into the cinema to watch it, I would highly recommend doing so.

Thanks for reading.
