REVIEW #48 Agents of Shield (2013-2020)

Agents of Shield is a spin off from the Marvel Cinematic Films, following Agent Phil Coulson as he leads a skilled unit within SHIELD. Throughout the 7 seasons they battle a number of different threats from powered individuals, Hydra, Asgardians and chronicom robots.

CAST & THE ACTING (8.5/10)

Clark Gregg reprises his role as Agent Coulson and I’m glad Marvel decided to explore this character further because we see much more personality and heart in contrast to what we see in the main MCU films. Chloe Bennett plays Daisy Johnson, known as quake in the comics, Elizabeth Henstridge and Ian De Caestecker play Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmonds and Ming-Na Wen plays Agent May. The group dynamic is really good and it brings a great chemistry between the cast which gets the audience invested in these characters. In particular Fitz and Simmonds, you are hooked on their relationship from season one all the way to season 7. Also I liked how the main MCU actors also appeared every now and then in this series, such as Samuel L Jackson and Colbie Smulders.

PLOT & THE STORYLINE (8.5/10)

The storylines are really good in the majority of the seasons, it’s all heavily linked with the main MCU films, mentioning the events themselves to give an indication of the time frame it’s set in. For example mentioning Ultron and also the Hydra infiltration in shield from Captain America Winter Soldier. This was a nice touch to remind the audience that we are still in that universe and it makes you appreciate Kevin Feige and Marvel even more because not only are they constructing 23+ films they are also linking in multiple series too, which takes so much work. My one criticism is the last couple seasons, I think they became a little to hectic and a bit too ambitious. I always find when you bring time travel into anything, you’re inviting so many questions and asking for plot holes. Those final seasons were still good but the first 5 are a lot better which is why I can’t give higher then a 8.5 out of 10.

CINEMATOGRAPHY & SPECIAL EFFECTS (8/10)

I think it’s obvious this series didn’t have the budget the films did so it is to be expected that the special effects wouldn’t quite be the same high quality we are used to as Marvel fans. However it’s still good enough to be convincing which is important. The cinematography is okay and the combat scenes are captured pretty well throughout the majority of the episodes. I don’t think there is enough quality to justify a score higher than 8 in this category but it is still a respectable score.

OVERALL (8.3/10)

I thoroughly enjoyed Agents of Shield, it was entertaining and helped introduce more Marvel comics characters such as Quake, Yo-yo and many more. I appreciated the many links to the main set of films and enjoyed how the films directly impacted the events in this series. It’s quite extraordinary how well thought out the Marvel cinematic universe is and I believe we will never see a set of films/series quite like this again. There are some really great characters within the 7 seasons, with my personal favourites being Fitz and Simmonds! A relationship you can really get invested in and the actors are great. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys Marvel!

Thanks for reading.
