REVIEW #392 Bad Times at the El Royale (2018)

SYNOPSIS

Seven mysterious and shady strangers meet at an abandoned hotel with a dark past. As time goes by, their secrets come out and they soon find themselves in a fix.

REVIEW

Bad Times at the El Royale is full of narrative U-Turns that keeps the audience on their toes regarding the array of mysterious protagonists. When you think you have one figured out, the film flips it on its head and you’ve found yourself proved wrong yet again! But for me, my favourite aspect was the cinematography, utilising beautiful wide shots to emphasise that feeling of loneliness and the vibe of abandonment at the El Royale Hotel. Unfortunately it did fall a little flat at times, the various pieces of the puzzle failing to hook me and there wasn’t really a single character I could get behind until perhaps the final ten minutes of the movie. Still an interesting watch though!

RATING: 7 out of 10
