REVIEW #52 A Quiet Place 2 (2021)

A Quiet Place: Part 2 is the sequel to the original 2018 film, directed by John Krasinski. The grieving family must leave their home and face the outside world beyond the sand path. Under constant threat from the deadly creatures that pounce on every sound, they soon realise that they are not the only danger in this post apocalyptic world.

CAST & THE ACTING (8.5/10)

What I enjoyed most about this film is how perfectly they casted one of the new leads Emmett played by Cillian Murphy. It’s rare that a sequel replaces a killed off character so brilliantly but this was certainly that. Murphy plays the grieving husband and father who has lost all hope for the world but soon feels obliged to help protect the Abbott family. He delivered a fantastic performance and the chemistry between himself and Millicent Simmonds Regan comes across really well on screen. Emily Blunt reprises her role as Evelyn and so does Noah Jupe as her son Marcus. They all delivered really strong and convincing performances which I believe justifies a really good score here.

PLOT & THE STORYLINE (9/10)

I really liked Krasinski’s approach to the 2nd instalment and especially the flashback at the start of the film where we see day one of these deadly creature attacks. It provided the necessary context to the first film and also set up the introduction for Emmett’s character really well. It explored a way of fighting back, following on from the first film where Lee’s experiments with Regans hearing aid seems to weaken the creatures. I also appreciated how it showed the effects this apocalypse has had on the other survivors, turning them into killers which is probably a realistic approach. Overall the plot was really gripping and had me on the edge of my seat, it was exciting and at times pretty stressful, which was great! The only criticism I would have is that some of the actions of the characters are pretty questionable, realistically they just wouldn’t do some of the things they did. However I understand that they have to create an entertaining film and therefore need to exaggerate some actions. So I think a 9 is deserved here.

CINEMATOGRAPHY & SPECIAL EFFECTS (8.5/10)

Watching this film in the cinema was great, the cinematography combined with the sound effects made it really exciting and jumpy, which was really entertaining. The special effects were great and the creatures look pretty convincing which helped get the audience invested into the story even more. Some of the scenes really were great to watch, I particularly enjoyed the darker moments of the film such as the boat docks and the final moments in the radio station. John Krasinski created a great film and you can tell he put a lot of focus into the cinematography and for a film with little dialogue the sound effects made up for it because they were brilliant.

OVERALL (8.7/10)

I really enjoyed this film and I have to credit John Krasinski because his approach to this sequel was spot on. The casting for the new characters was perfect and the cast delivered strong, convincing performances which got the audience invested into the characters. The plot was exciting and gripping even with some of the questionable actions from some of the characters which probably wouldn’t happen in a real life scenario. But after all this isn’t real life and they have to create an exciting film. The cinematography and special effects were good and visually it was great too but I have to mention the sound effects to because they made you forget about how little dialogue there is, really good! I’d recommend this film to anyone and if you get a chance to get into a cinema to watch it then even better!

Thanks for reading.
