REVIEW #65 Loki (2021)

Loki season 1 is directed by Kate Herron and follows the God of Mischief after the events of Endgame which allow him to escape the battle of New York with the tesseract. Captured by the TVA he soon realises how big the universe is and just how small he is in comparison.

CAST & THE ACTING

Tom Hiddleston is brilliant as Loki in this series and displays real range, allowing the audience to explore the character on a much deeper level to what we have previously seen in the MCU films. Marvel really have smashed each live action series they have released since Endgame and I believe the reason for that is how much emotional depth they have given to each of the lead characters and similarly to the likes of Elizabeth Olsen and Sebastian Stan, Hiddleston delivers an outstanding performance. Sophia Di Martino also steals the showing portraying such a powerful female variant of Loki called Sylvie. The chemistry between the two actors is what makes this series so special and gets the audience so invested in their story. Owen Wilson is Mobius, another great addition to the MCU and provides us with another great partnership between him and Loki. I think the dynamic between all the characters is what makes Loki such a special series and the acting displayed really is brilliant!

PLOT & THE STORYLINE

The storyline is probably the most ambitious project from Marvel yet and it is actually probably the best yet too! The concept of the TVA is amazing and Loki’s reaction to them in the first episode sums up the power of this organisation and who is running it. The plot also sets up all of the upcoming multiverse projects and I’m sure will tie in nicely to the new Spider-Man and Doctor Strange films. The finale also gives an indication on who will be the next Thanos level threat for all our Marvel heroes and I actually think it’s going to be the best villain yet! What I enjoyed the most however was the deep exploration into the characters, we dive into Loki’s character so much more which causes the audience to fall in love with the character. The sub plots of these series was certainly the relationships between these characters, the friendship between Mobius and Loki and even the romance between Loki and Sylvie, it got me so hooked on each episode and so excited for the next one to be released!

CINEMATOGRAPHY & SPECIAL EFFECTS

I feel like I almost repeat myself in this category for every Marvel film, again it was outstanding. A huge budget dedicated to creating beautiful visuals and amazing special effects meant that it created a whole new world for the audience to discover. Whether it was highlighting the powers of Loki and that of the Loki variants, or creating huge new landscapes such as Lamentis-1, it was fantastic to watch. The scene that stood out was classic Loki and his huge display of power, not only did it look great but it also hinted at the potential power of Loki which I hope we see more of in future projects. The fact Marvel are going down the more magical route with characters now means we are going to be seeing such clever special effects which will create even more beautiful scenes for viewers to enjoy, which is incredibly exciting!

OVERALL (9.4/10)

I think it’s safe to say this is my favourite series yet from Marvel, it seems like they are constantly upping their game with every release! I thought Tom Hiddleston and Sophia Di Martino absolutely stole the show, displaying so many layers to their acting ability. They could have the audience laughing one minute and crying the next which is a credit to their acting ability. The plot was very ambitious but certainly paid off and I can’t wait to see what’s next for these characters in season 2! The cinematography and special effects were outstanding and the plot was so captivating and had everyone desperate to see the next episode. Kevin Feige and director Kate Herron have created something really special and I would recommend everyone go and watch Loki.

Thanks for reading!
