REVIEW #172 Peaky Blinders (Season 6)

Season 6 joins back up with Thomas Shelby as he plans to infiltrate the far right party in the United Kingdom, whilst commencing business with his American rivals associated with his cousin Michael Gray. We also see the Shelby family rocked by personal issues, illnesses, deaths and addictions but will they be enough to halt Tommys plans.

This was the 6th and final season of the beloved Peaky Blinders TV show, with the finale film set to start production in 2023. First of all I want to say that this was a fantastic season, it might not have been as exciting as previous seasons, less action certainly but the intricate storyline allowed for strong character development and created some of the most beautiful cinematography I have ever seen from a television series. I really enjoyed the heavy focus on Tommy’s psyche, little changes to his habits that made the little moments count throughout the 6 episodes. I won’t be including any spoilers but there are so many beautiful interactions between characters that were perfect for the final season. I loved Ada, she is such an underrated character and Sophie Rundle delivered some amazing scenes. Arthur’s struggles continued and I’m not sure I appreciated that, he needs a break! It seems like he has just had constant issues and although Paul Anderson’s acting is phenomenal I do wish we saw the character find some true peace. That being said his gun fight outside the Garason pub was ICONIC, the performance, the cinematography and the meaning behind the scene, everything was just perfect. My biggest criticism for this series was the fact that they announced there would be a film before the series was released, this meant that the big twist at the end was so predictable. If we genuinely believed that episode 6 was the last we would ever see of Peaky Blinders then the audience would have been an emotional mess! Overall I don’t think this was the strongest season out of the 6, however it was still to a very high standard and I cannot wait to see what’s in store next. To finish on a strong note, the way they handled the tragic passing of Helen McCrory was brilliant and it was the best send off to the character and a beautiful dedication to a wonderful actress taken way too soon.

Thanks for reading.
