Review #186 Jurassic World Dominion (2022)

Set 4 years after the events of Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom, Dinosaurs now wonder the globe and live along side humans. But is it the Dinosaurs that pose the biggest threat to Human life or is it the scientists who continue experimenting with Dino genetics?

Jurassic World: Dominion is yet another example of how professional film critics are worlds apart from the impressions of the general public. First of all I want to advise anyone who has put off watching this film because of the 31% rotten tomatoes score, to ignore it completely because Dominion is a lot of fun! Granted it feels like a film that is completely different to the beloved 1996 classic that kicked off the entire franchise but that makes sense right? We don’t want the movie studios to try and recreate a copy but instead to expand the universe and progress in a way that makes logical sense to the audience and Colin Trevorrow has achieved that. It’s far from perfect though, some of the action sequences simply defy physics and as a result, are very questionable at times, but nonetheless you still have fun watching them. Dominion is mainly expanding the storyline of the danger of genetic manipulation and that’s angered some people but for me it makes sense, as I mentioned, it’s logical progression and it’s something that actually seems realistic to me, big companies would no doubt be trying to use this tech to give them a competitive advantage and that’s kind of what happens in the film. The acting is pretty solid and to see the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World casts combine was a really heartfelt moment that created plenty of enjoyable interactions, they had really good chemistry together. In regards to the cinematography I believe for the most part it looked great, they covered quite a few locations throughout the film which displayed beautiful scenery from icy snow capped mountains,  Jungle terrain and Mediterranean scenery filmed in Malta. I’ve said it 100’s of times before and I’ll say it again, I just love organic cinematography using beautiful scenery it just looks amazing on the big screen. However it did feel like we was cutting to lots of different locations pretty quickly which definitely made it messier. That probably comes down to there being a lot of characters to follow, it’s a big cast not only adding in the original characters but also adding in new characters such as Kayla Watts played by DeWanda Wise, who was great by the way! There was a lot of focus on Maisie Lockwood, her creation and also her new life with Clair and Owen, that sub plot acted as the heart of the film, injecting those more emotional moments that could effect the audience. One final criticism I have was that it almost seemed PG, it’s super kid friendly and although you do see Dinosaurs killing people it’s hardly done in the same manor of the original Jurassic park, which definitely reduced the tension and the overall threat of danger.

So to summarise, yes it’s a very unique addition to the Jurassic franchise but it’s still very enjoyable, with the low scores coming across as unjustified in my opinion. Get out to watch it and find out for yourself, I’m sure you’ll like it more than you think.

Overall (7.5/10)

Thanks for reading.
