REVIEW #192 The Bad Batch (Season 1)

The Bad Batch follows a unique squad of Clones trying to find their way after the events of the Clone Wars. Dealing with the effects of Order 66, this family of fighters try to survive in a world ruled by the newly formed Empire.

At the very centre of this Star Wars animated show are the core themes of family and brotherhood and that represents perfectly, the beliefs that these misfit clones live by. The deformities that blessed them with their unique abilities also allowed these clones to hold off the effect of the inhibitor chips that enforced Order 66 and allowed them to think freely for themselves. This puts them at direct odds with the newly formed empire and makes for an intriguing story and a nice addition to the Star Wars franchise. There is no doubting that this is one cool group of clones, we saw glimpses of their talent in The Clone Wars but The Bad Batch allows them to be the main focus and that creates plenty of thrilling action sequences. The animation also has to be credited because it looks amazing, the final two episodes are prime examples of that but we have great visuals consistently throughout the entire series. Although I enjoyed the family bond that the characters had and their protectiveness over Omega, I can’t help but think I weren’t quite as emotionally connected to the characters as I was in The Clone Wars. Obviously I’m going to have more of a bias towards the mainstream protagonists like Anakin, Ahsoka and Obi-Wan so I kind of assumed that would be the case going into the series. Despite that lack of emotional investment, a lot of the scenes still warm your heart because after all a family that stick by each mother no matter what is always nice to see, Dominic Toretto would be proud! The storyline itself was actually really engaging, we see a number of familiar faces pop up to help the team at various points and that familiarity helps strengthen that connection to the central canon storyline. I enjoyed seeing the immediate aftermath of Order 66 from a different perspective, the hints at the rebellion forming and I can’t wait to see how The Bad Batch influences that further in season 2. As far as first seasons go, this was a really solid start and an interesting spin off from the Clone Wars. I would definitely recommend watching it for sure!

Overall (7.5/10)
