REVIEW #225 Wednesday (Season 1)

Wednesday Addams is placed into Nevermore academy, a school for outcasts and the supernatural. Whilst navigating the social constructs of the school, Wednesday attempts to master her physic abilities, thwart a killing spree and solve a decades old mystery.

I think it’s fair to say that Jenna Ortega steals the show throughout the entire season with her captivating performance and witty dialogue delivery. Unfortunately I found the storyline to be extremely predictable, a plot that is rather common across a lot of supernatural TV shows or films, especially when said project is set within a school for supernaturals! Now that being said, the cinematography for the show was very creative and for the most part, it was a real strong point. The only criticism I would have is the CGI for the various creatures wasn’t very realistic and looked rather out of place. I certainly appreciated the amount of close up shots used in all 8 episodes, especially for Wednesday Addams because it allowed us to see the tiny changes in her facial expressions. This was vital because most of the time Jenna Ortega gave nothing away and would portray a rather plain faced expression, which suits the ‘emotionless’ narrative for her character, but the close ups highlighted the rare flashes of emotion.

There is a rather effective character arc for Wednesday and her development was a joy to watch as she slowly started to come out of her shell, make friends and display some vulnerability. Despite being rather cynical, with a dark view of the world, she is incredibly likeable with her dark humour and brutally honest persona. It’s just a shame that element of the story is slightly overshadowed by the unbelievably predictable killer reveal, I mean surely we all knew exactly who it was by episode 4 at the latest? Either way Wednesday is still a very enjoyable show, a creative take on The Addams Family with Wednesday as the central protagonist. If not for anything else, it’s a must watch for Ortega’s performance alone!

Overall (7/10)
