REVIEW #236 Game of Thrones (S7)

How I would summarise season 7 is frustratingly good! Now let me explain, I love this season a lot and it had amazing set pieces, combined with interesting character interactions that were just a joy to watch. But the frustrating aspect derives from their decision to opt out of the usual 10 episode format, which has worked so well in the past. I feel like those three extra episodes would have fleshed out this season even more and provided further insight into these characters before the finale season. The consequence of that decision is that it felt like we kept witnessing small time jumps. Not intentionally large ones like House of The Dragon but small subtle ones that were more of an annoyance than anything else. It gave the impression that the show runners were trying to hurry everything along and this continued into season 8, creating my biggest criticism of the final two seasons…rushing!

Despite the need to rush things, there is plenty to enjoy. Episode 6 was amazing, Daenerys flying beyond the wall, saving Jon and co but losing a dragon in the process, that’s great TV. I loved it even more because I guessed the night king would eventually steal a dragon, way back when season 3 first aired! But what I particularly enjoyed was the small moments between characters, the hounds reunion with Brianne, Podricks reunion with Tyrion, the chemistry between Jon and Daenerys. It was all of these simple moments that just put a smile on my face and reminded me why I love the show so much. It also had big deaths in Little Finger and Viserion, so it still had its fair share of drama! Often people criticise the decision to have Arya run into Nymeria because it didn’t contribute to the story, but I disagree! I don’t think every moment has to contribute to the main plot, but instead provide a flash into Ayra’s past which was nice considering her entire arc has been so disconnected from Westeros for a while at this point! So in conclusion, I think season 7 is underrated amongst the fan base, it’s enjoyable, it’s wholesome, it has some amazing cinematography and it sets up the final season well, even if it was slightly rushed!

Overall (9.2/10)

Thanks for reading!
