REVIEW #280 Guardians of The Galaxy 3 (2023)

As Peter Quill deals with the loss of Gamora, he is forced to rally the Guardians as they are attacked, they must dig up past horrors in order to save one of their own.

James Gunn executes a fitting conclusion to his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy! Utilising the emotional core of Rockets past with the trademark humour of his writing, to create an extremely enjoyable movie. There is no doubt that selecting the High Evolutionary as the central antagonist for the final film was a stroke of genius and Gunn was right in declaring him as possibly the MCU’S cruelest villain yet! Chukwudi Iwuji was absolutely brilliant and he ignites a feeling of hatred from the audience with his performance, assisted of course by the tragic storytelling of Rockets origins. It gave the furry fan favourite the spotlight, which he absolutely deserved.

There is no doubt that the visual effects within the MCU as of late has been mediocre at best but this third Guardians instalment is a sign that things could be back on the right track. Of course there were a couple of instances where the CGI did look questionable but it was a vast improvement from what we saw in Ant-Man 3! The soundtrack remains one of the best aspects of any James Gunn film and once again it injected so much life into the movie. What makes this different from the first two? Well I’d say the heart, the emotion, all of that was at the forefront in both the storytelling and in the characters. The entire group is closer, more of a family and that makes the stakes of any of the dangerous scenarios that much higher.

Now some of the negatives… my main issue was the evolved human like animals, they just looked stupid in my opinion, I didn’t like that one bit. It just threw me off and although they were integral to the High Evolutionary’s motives and core beliefs, I just didn’t like the look of them. Secondly, once again the audience is misled when it comes to a death, I won’t say who, or when but I hate the MCU’S need to constantly undermine a sacrifice or fallen soldier. If you want to kill someone off, stick to it, if you don’t then stop acting like you are! It’s happening in every movie lately and I’m getting a bit sick of it, it means I’m not emotionally invested in any of the characters fates because I know that somehow, no matter how stupid it seems, they’ll be okay! But rant over, it doesn’t effect the story too much but it’s just a nit pick of mine.

To conclude the review, I’m so happy that it’s another really strong addition to the MCU, it’s not tied in to the wider timeline and it’s worked beautifully on its own, giving this variation of the Guardians a heartwarming send off that all fans will enjoy. I’m looking forward to seeing where some of the characters pop up again, especially Adam the Warlock, once he’s matured he’ll be such a great character. Be sure to check this out in the cinemas because it’s made for the big screen!

Overall (8.7/10)

Thanks for reading.
