REVIEW #386 MaXXXine (2024)

In 1980’s Hollywood, adult film star Maxine Minx finally gets her big break but a mysterious Killer in town threatens her newly found fame.

Ti West’s MaXXXine brings the 80’s to life, his style creating a wonderful aesthetic that is incredibly immersive. Unfortunately the writing really let the movie down here, it felt like a failed thriller, having lost pretty much every horror element that was present in the previous two movies of the franchise. I know a lot of horrors create a blend of fright and goofiness but MaXXXine definitely lent into the latter. Mia Goth is still the scream queen of this generation and performs well, in fact most of the cast deliver good performances, the exception being the final antagonist who was just way too over the top for my liking. It goes to show just how important the writers are because pretty much every other components of the film was pretty strong, so it certainly feels a shame having come away not really enjoying it. There are a couple of gruesome deaths, but those are easy to create and aren’t inherently scary. You might not get scares but at least you’ll have a chance to appreciate the pretty stacked cast on display!

Overall (6/10)

Thanks for reading.
