REVIEW #390 Twisters (2024)

Meteorologist Kate’s research leads her straight into the storm, where she hopes to tame the tornados, putting an end to the devastation.

Twisters really feels like peak cinema and I don’t mean in the technical sense but just a good old traditional blockbuster! The stakes for the characters are high and the movie sets that tone right from the off with a devastating opening sequence that doesn’t shy away from tragedy. The underpinning romance angle is always effective in a disaster movie, providing depth to the plot beyond simple destruction and large set pieces. That being said, those set pieces were great too, executed by impressive special effects and cinematography. These types of films never break new ground but strive for entertainment and and enjoyable ride for the audience and Twisters does just that. Glenn Powell and Daisy Edgar Jones make a charming duo and Powell really is at the forefront of this next generation of pure film stars! I managed to catch the film in IMAX and that really helped immerse me into the storm and the sound was phenomenal, my heart rate was going crazy. It’s the sort of film I loved growing up, just like the original! It’s not something out of a filmmaking text book, but a blockbuster that can leave a lasting impression on the new generation getting into movies for the first time.

Overall (8/10)

Thanks for reading.
