REVIEW #389 The Boys (Season 4)

The world is on the bring and Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office. Meanwhile Homelander is consolidating his power.

The Boys Season 4 advances the story into the endgame, setting up the finale season perfectly as we enter an armageddon of ‘superhero’ supremacy. This season upped the violence and finally showed the true power of the lesser superheroes that perhaps we haven’t seen before, for example the strength of The Deep or the powers of the new Black Noir. The strength level of different supes are still all over the place, withstanding big hits one minute but then getting injured relatively easy in another moment of the show, I think that can be a little confusing at times and it’s one area that needs to be clearer.

One aspect I really enjoyed was the internal struggle illustrated through Butchers hallucinations, it worked well and the way it was portrayed was really creative. Each character was dealing with their own personal issues throughout the eight episodes and despite that, it never really felt overcrowded with sub plots. It was a nice way to subtly show that ‘The Boys’ felt more at peace when they were together and driven by a singular purpose, compared to how they felt outside of the team. Of course Anthony Starr continues to thrive as the iconic antagonist and it’s about time this man won some awards because he’s created one of the best performed antagonists of all time in my opinion. At this point can The Boys seem a little repetitive? Of course, when you have a singular antagonist for 4 seasons it can get that way, but I’m still enjoying every single season and they find little ways to spice it up every time. But it’s probably the most excited I’ve been for a new season (Season 5) of The Boys in a long time, it’s going to be absolute carnage and I can’t wait.

Overall (8.5/10)

Thanks for reading.
