REVIEW #404 Blink Twice (2024)

SYNOPSIS

When cocktail waitress Frida meets tech billionaire, Slater King, she is invited to his Island for a spontaneous getaway with champagne and luxury, before things take a sinister turn.

REVIEW:

Blink Twice is the directorial debut of Zoe Kravitz and a fantastic one at that, a fresh addition to the horror genre with something that is reminiscent to the beloved Get Out. There’s a little more humour but an equally sickening twist that is not only enough to turn your stomach but also enough to ignite conversation around certain societal themes too. From the trailer it’s clear that things will soon turn sinister but I didn’t expect it to be to the extent it was and I do appreciate being surprised, especially in a genre that is pretty damn predictable. Naomi Ackie performs well as the lead protagonist Frida but I particularly enjoyed seeing Channing Tatum in the antagonist role, something I hope more directors would consider in the future. For a debut film the cinematography, editing and overall construction of the film was pretty impressive, creating an uneasy atmosphere for the audience, reflecting that of the women characters in the movie. Blink Twice gets a strong recommendation from me and I can’t wait to see where Kravitz heads to next.

RATING: (8.5/10)
