My Review
Alex Garland is back again with yet another hit and this time it’s a brutally gruesome true story that paints the worst kind of picture of War, even the usual army propaganda critics might just be silenced! The film starts brilliantly, I loved the opening minute which showed the bond of the squad, short and effective, acting as a haunting juxtaposition to the deadly silence that follows in the second scene. That brief moment of joy and fun, in that opening scene, left me with a smile plastered on my face, but it was soon replaced with uncomfortable tension that was exacerbated by spectacular sound design that never gives the audience an inch to breathe. This was symbolic of the suffocating environment these soldiers were in, surrounded, injured, in shock and that sound I mentioned just helped transport us into that setting along side them. It’s bloody, it’s unapologetic and it was a hell of a ride, everything you would want from a modern war film. It doesn’t have that over dramatised sense of fantasy to it and I think that worked really well. Credit to the stacked cast who all performed nicely! One to experience with that cinema surround sound, but if you’re squeamish, you might want to sit this one out.
My Rating: 8 out of 10.
Thanks for reading.
