The Phoenician Scheme

My Review

Wes Anderson never disappoints when it comes to his illustrious set design, aesthetically pleasing cinematography and the peculiar, yet impressive performances from his expansive cast. That being said, I’m not often engaged by the storylines of Anderson’s films, I respect the screenplays for sure, but the subject matter can be really hit and miss. The Phoenician scheme however, was far more cohesive than some of his other instalments, with a clearer central narrative. Michael Cera was born to collaborate with Wes Anderson, rarely does the humour and style of an actor align so perfectly with a director, but that’s certainly the case here. Benicio Del Toro was a great leading man and similarly to Cera, fits the style of the movie perfectly. Unfortunately the ending felt unsatisfying, an hour and a half of build up to this mysterious project and when the film comes to its end, we are still none the wiser. It left a sour taste and sure, I understand that the climax was really Korda’s personal growth and relationship with his daughter, but I still believe the film would have benefitted from a far clearer approach to his project and its demise. But all in all, I do believe this is one of the directors more approachable projects, that neutrals can enjoy more. However, Grand Budapest Hotel, still takes the crown as his best movie!

My Rating: 7 out of 10
