My Review

Josh Safdie shows yet again that he is one of the best in class when it comes to creating anxiety inducing films that thrive in chaos, creating a selfishly ambitious character that you simply can’t help but root for, despite his almost overbearing flaws! For the Chalamet haters, I’m pleased to say Marty Supreme will prove that he is every bit as great as he claims to be, delivering one of the best performances of the year, silencing his critics! Whilst Safdie also utilises a less conventional cast of actors that were brilliant, bringing a real sense of authenticity through their performances.

The film transports you back to the 1950’s with its incredible set and costume designs, but the cinematography has a strong focus on close ups, using long lenses to magnify features and build a sense of intimacy with the characters on screen. But one of my favourite aspects of Marty Supreme was the poignant musical score, which almost felt like a slight juxtaposition to the time setting, but partnered perfectly with the chaotic atmosphere and themes of unapologetic ambition. Marty Supreme may evoke some pretty conflicting emotions towards its complex protagonist but it’s a film that will keep audiences on their toes, filled with anxiety and excitement as we’re taken on a wild roller coaster that is Marty Mauser’s life! What a film.

My Rating: 9 out of 10
