My Review
Cal McMau has created an anxiety filled crime thriller that never allows the audience a moment respite. I found myself stuck on the edge of my seat as we witness the minefield that is life in prison. David Jonsson and Tom Blyth drop two of the best performances we will see all year! Blyth with the gruelling intensity that formed a monstrous, yet complex antagonist, reeling you in with the manipulative acts of kindness before shattering those expectations with a burst of aggressiveness that multiplied the tension tenfold. Whereas David Jonsson’s performance was far more subtle, but no less powerful, as he portrayed the timid drug addict that was desperately trying to return home to his son. They were the yin and yang that acted as the driving force behind the narrative and its themes of addiction, transactional relationships, as well as the corruption and dangers within the criminal justice system.
But what was equally impressive was the cinematography and the editing, I genuinely felt like a fly on the wall, almost documentary-like in its execution. The 3:2 aspect ratio, generated that feeling of claustrophobia within the tiny cells of the prison. They also switched back and forth between camera shots and mobile phone points of view, which enhanced that sense of realism with sharp cutting between scenes to help build a tense and anxious atmosphere. The musical score by Forest Swords acted as the glue between the cinematography and the performances, setting the tone of the film and establishing that sense of unease for the audience. This is a must watch in my opinion and deserves more attention!
My Rating: 8.5 out of 10
