REVIEW
Interstellar remains one of, if not my favourite stand alone movie of all time. It’s a film that, although on the surface seems abstract and other worldly, actually includes many themes that resonate in today’s society. The treatment of our planet, humanities quest into the stars and the ticking clock on earths capabilities to continually harvest food for our people. However, despite the overarching narrative literally being out of this world, the heart of the film is centred around family, loss and our very limited time on this planet. Christopher Nolan’s amazing writing poses the question of humanities ability to sacrifice their immediate needs in the quest to serve a higher purpose and its that constant battle presented through Matthew McConaughey’s lead character Joseph Cooper that provokes such an emotional response from the audience from start to finish. It also provides a wonderful quote from Matt Damon’s character Dr Mann “We can care deeply - Selflessly, for those we know but that empathy rarely extends beyond our line of sight”. Which is incredibly powerful and thought provoking and that is certainly not the only quote like this in the film.
A film rarely has so many components at such a high level, with Nolan at the wheel and Hoyte Van Hoytema on the cinematography, Interstellar is a visual masterpiece that ignites the screen and transports us into the vastness of space, witnessing its frightening beauty from our cinema seats. But the visuals wouldn’t be as impactful if it wasn’t for Hans Zimmer and arguably his best musical score! The music drove home those emotional notes, bringing tears to my eyes at times. The Corn chase scene isn’t a sad one, but the score combined with the beautiful moment between the cooper family was enough to draw a tear! Then you amplify that sound in IMAX and it literally shook our seats and it felt like I was in the rockets with the characters. The cast is exceptional and McConaughey in particular gives one of his best performances but credit to the entire ensemble cast because everyone performed brilliantly. To conclude, the recent re-release of Interstellar and IMAX goes straight up there as one of my favourite cinematic experiences of all time and further cements the movie as one of my all time favourites. The peak of sci-fi!
