REVIEW #346 Masters of The Air (Season 1)

Explores the Aerial warfare of World War 2 through the men of the Eighth airforce of the United States Army. Unfortunately I didn’t I connect with this show as others did, I appreciated the story don’t get me wrong, the contrasting approach to Aerial warfare between the British and the Americans was hard to believe but it was all incredibly slow. The battles are repetitive, with the United States airforce just getting ripped to shreds in the daylight. I understood their intentions, it was repetitive to highlight the heavy losses. But it just didn’t work for me, despite the cinematography being really impressive at times. The cast is obviously stacked, with rising stars dotted throughout the 9 episodes and the season certainly finishes a lot stronger than it starts. The final episodes of the camps appealed to me a lot more. Nevertheless, I found it a real struggle at times, which is a shame because I had high hopes for it. Overall (6.5/10) Thanks for reading. REVIEW #345 Late Night With The Devil (2024)

In 1977 a late night television show goes horribly wrong, unleashing evil into the nations living room. Late Night With The Devil is such a refreshing take on the horror genre, with brilliant cinematography that perfected that 1970’s aesthetic. Led by the talented David Dastmalchian, the movie follows the late night show ‘Night Owls’ on their Halloween special as they desperately try to win the ratings battle. It switches between footage from the live show and then behind the scenes footage from the intervals, alternating between colour and black and white which I really enjoyed. Creatively, it was probably one of the best horrors I’ve seen in a while because I’ve never really seen it done like that, with so many plot points converging into one live show! It’s far from scary, I don’t necessarily think that was their approach but the ending plays a psychological twist on the audience, leaving them to guess what just happened and it truly left me puzzled. Definitely worth catching if you

REVIEW #344 Drive Away Dolls (2024)

In the search for a fresh start, two girls embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee which soon takes a wild turn as they cross paths with inept criminals. This film flew under the radar for me, I didn’t see a single bit of advertising and just happened to stumble across it when looking for a film to see in the cinema. I won’t proclaim the film a masterpiece, it’s far from it and is likely to be forgotten about pretty quickly but it was a fun watch nonetheless. A silly comedy with a silly set of antagonists but it did have people laughing in the theatres, so it worked well at times. I couldn’t quite believe it was Ethan Coen who directed the movie, but it does explain how they managed to persuade Pedro Pascal and Matt Damon to make cameos! It’s a super short film, so it won’t take up too much of your time. Overall (6/10) Thanks for reading. Callan

REVIEW #343 The Gentlemen (Season 1)

When Eddie, the wealthy Duke, inherits his families empire, he discovers its home to a huge weed empire and the proprietors aren’t going anywhere! Guy Ritchie’s spin off series is a certified success! He keeps finding new, innovative ways to illustrate his iconic style on screen. Theo James is fantastic, leading the show by example as the tough skinned Duke, who hits the ground running in the criminal underworld. There is a wide variety of talented actors supporting him, from Kaya Scodelario to Ray Winstone and everyone in between. The story flows nicely and the pacing is pretty much perfect. It takes its time to flesh out the characters but keeps things fast enough to ensure the audience are on the edge of their seats. There are a couple of predictable moments which is the only real criticism I could find with the writing but nonetheless it’s left me desperate for a season 2!   Overall (8.8/10) Thanks for reading. REVIEW #342 Dune: Part 2 (2024)

Paul Artreides joins the Fremen, learning their ways and taking up revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Dune Part 2 has garnered high praise from fans and critics alike and rightly so, id go as far as to say that it’s probably a top 3 sequel of all time and it could even be the greatest. Dennis Villeneuve has been my favourite director ever since the release of Blade Runner 2049, his style and approach to movies meets my taste to perfection, the man just gets it! He returns to the world of Dune in spectacular fashion, utilising his extremely talented cast, one of the best cinematographers in the game and of course we can’t forget the greatest composer of all time (in my opinion) Hans Zimmer. Paul Artreides story continues and for those who are unfamiliar with the books, it’s perhaps not in the way some would expect but Villeneuve handles it well. The final act in particular was probably the most impressive I’ve seen from any film, my heart was pounding, I was on t
